How to Check Fabric Quality Before Buying – Complete Guide
Introduction
Fabric quality plays a very important role in the textile and garment industry. Whether you are a buyer, retailer, exporter, or student, knowing how to check fabric quality can save you from loss and customer complaints. In this guide, we will explain simple and practical ways to check fabric quality before buying.
1. Check the Fabric Composition
First, always check the fabric composition label.
Common examples:
¤ 100% Cotton
¤ 100% Polyester
¤ 60% Cotton / 40% Polyester
The fiber content affects comfort, durability, and price. Pure cotton is soft and breathable, while polyester is stronger and more wrinkle-resistant.
2. Feel the Fabric Texture
Touch the fabric with your hand.
Ask yourself:
¤ Is it soft or rough?
¤ Is it too thin?
¤ Does it feel strong?
High-quality fabric usually feels smooth and comfortable. Poor quality fabric may feel harsh or uneven.
3. Check GSM (Fabric Weight)
GSM (Grams per Square Meter) tells you how heavy the fabric is.
¤ Low GSM → light fabric (good for summer)
¤ High GSM → thick fabric (good for winter)
Always match GSM with the product requirement. For example, T-shirts usually require 140–180 GSM.
4. Stretch and Recovery Test
Gently stretch the fabric and release it.
Good quality fabric should:
¤ Return to its original shape
¤ Not remain loose or stretched
If it loses shape easily, quality may be poor.
5. Check Stitching and Weaving
Look closely at the fabric structure.
¤ Are threads evenly woven?
¤ Are there gaps or loose threads?
¤ Is the stitching neat (for finished garments)?
Uneven weaving can reduce durability.
6. Perform a Light Test
Hold the fabric against light.
If too much light passes through:
¤ Fabric may be too thin
¤ It may not be suitable for certain garments
This test helps you understand thickness and density.
7. Color Fastness Test
Rub the fabric with a white cloth slightly.
If color transfers easily, it may bleed after washing. Good quality fabric should have strong color fastness.
8. Shrinkage Test
If possible, wash a small sample.
Some fabrics shrink after washing. Cotton may shrink slightly, but excessive shrinkage means poor finishing.
9. Check for Fabric Defects
Look carefully for:
¤ Holes
¤ Oil stains
¤ Lines or marks
¤ Printing defects
Especially important in export fabric orders.
Importance in Textile Business
In Pakistan’s textile market, fabric rejection due to quality issues can cause major financial loss. Export buyers are very strict about GSM, shrinkage, and color fastness. Therefore, checking fabric quality before buying is very important.
